Outerspace Living
A :30 spec film for Capita Snowboards
01The brief
The Capita Outerspace Living 5.5 II carries its philosophy on the deck: The Overview Effect. Spaceship Earth. A line from Adlai Stevenson. I own one. Nobody asked for this film. I made it because the concept was already printed on the board and no one had filmed it.
02The insight
Every snowboarder has had their own Overview Effect. The moment at the summit, before the drop, when you stop, look out, and feel the planet under you.
Thirty years of snowboard advertising has tried to film its way out of that silence with speed and tricks. Capita printed the silence on the board.
03The idea
Don't show the conquest. Show the return.
An astronaut stands on the Moon with the board. Earth hangs in the sky. They pick it up, walk to the crater rim, set it down, and look in. The film ends on the decision, not the ride.
The only voice is Stevenson's, recorded in Geneva on July 9, 1965, five days before he died. Capita printed the same words on the deck.
04The making
The opening frame is a photograph, not a generation. Earth setting behind the lunar horizon, three weeks old when I cut to it. FLOW animated the cloud drift between two copies of the same still, so the composition could not wander.
Prompt excerptSporadic shortwave radio static, like someone slowly scanning frequencies, searching for the right station. No voice. No music. No melody. Only the static searching.

The original Overview Effect. Everything in the film answers to this photograph.
William Anders, Apollo 8, December 24, 1968
The idea did not come from a prompt. It came from reading the deck. My own board, photographed on my bed.
The same deck, on my bed and on the Moon. Composited in NanoBanana2 and used as the start frame for the arrival shot, so the graphics stayed true through every generation.
Prompt excerptThe Capita Outerspace Living board stands upright beside them, deck facing camera. Earth is massive in the upper-right background, filling a third of the sky. The camera holds. Both figures, the astronaut and the board, are completely still.
Nothing in the film was invented from nothing. The suit references NASA's Artemis AxEMU. The crater is the rim of Shackleton, from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter imagery.

The last beat. The board is set down base to the regolith and the astronaut looks into the bowl. Hold. Cut to black.
Prompt excerptThey set the board down at their feet, base down on the regolith, deck facing up. They stand at the edge, looking into the deep bowl below. The pause before the commitment.
Sound
Two layers and no music. Shortwave static that scans, then settles, as if the frequency is almost found. A hard cut into the vacuum of the Moon. Breathing. Boots on regolith, felt more than heard.
